So just wondering whats out there thats accessable in terms of creating websites. I am getting ready to do one for my band and was wondering what to use. Heard good things about WordPress, anything else i should look at?
Yeah. It's a handy utility called note pad, and a language called html, or Hyper Text Markup Language. lol. That's just my personal preference. I like doing my HTML by hand, just because I can have more control over it...
I do too Chris. If your serious, and you know your ISP won't mind, (which from my tech teacher they don't unless you get a bunch of hits) run it off o your external IP. Get a DYNDNS account, and set it up that way. I'm starting to work on using WAMP (Windows Apatchi, MYSQL, PHP). I am not even gonna mess with MYSQL or Apatchi, and am using W3schools to start PHP.
I like MYSQL, Apache and PHP myself. But as the dj said, it's a matter of personal choice. I'm also a notepad guy, but have also used arachnophilia, a beautiful little website editor, and various cms's like drupal, wordpress (a blogging platform) and so on. Wordpress I like, if you want to attach a blog to the site, but not if you want to put up a website with it, although it is possible, it's just not my thing. The cms's are allright, but not really as flexible as I'd like them to be in terms of the kinds of content you can put up there.
The upshot, if you want a tool that'll make your life easier, my personal choice would be arachnophilia 4.0, and if you want to just do it all by hand, and not bother with all that messing about, grab yourself notepad and the necessary books on html and whatever serverside scripting language you'll need. Good luck in your website creation.

Simon
I'm still looking at different hosts as well, but I know html but not very good at the css part and rubbish at php. Does anyone know of a way I can see my php files on my own computer? Instead of being asked if I want to download them or whatever it says?
Hit your applications key on them, and say open with submenu. Say notepad or wordpad. That should bring them up for you. For free hosts, I'd recomend 50webs.com You can upload your HTML files to the site through FTP if you'd like. If you pay though, they will give you more things such as MYSQL and PHP. You could also use freewebs.com, but that site will put ads at the top of your pages. They aren't large ads, but I like 50webs, because they don't do that. I also found freewebs a bit harder to use, but I didn't mess with it much when I had my account.
I guess I should of mentioned that i was trying to avoid going the Notepad HTML from scratch and DYNDNS.org route again. I did all that in the pass , but now don't have the time really to code from scratch and fully relearn HTML, and all i have is alaptop these days and its off at times which means the site would be down if i used DYNDNS.org. And the free solutions (which i think i tried one of in the past) are great but not enough for a bands website usually, especially when you are planning on putting some music and possibly performance clips on the site. I did recently find www hostmonster.com which for $7 a month gives you unlimited bandwith and storageamong abunch of stuff, so gonna give that a shot, and if all else fails i'll go back to go daddy.com since there were the best bang for the buck i found before this. So tell me more about this WAMP thing, and i will check out arachnophilia. I take that it works well with screenreaders?
If you use wamp, you'll need a hostname if you want a site to go up. For instance, if you were to go to
http://blindndangerous.homeftp.net
you'd reach my wamp homepage. If I didn't have a DYNDNS, you'd have to type
http://xx.xxx.xxx.xxx
to get to it.
The site I got it from was
http://www.jaws-users.com/programs/
Some great little programs there, including Aracnophilia 4.0. It is a full fledged website editor, accessible with JAWS, and so probably others as well. I've only ever used JAWS though, except a bit of SA, so can't say for certain. When you open a new document, you can choose from html file, txt file, rtf, cgi, javascript, pearl or c++. Once you open your html file, you are given a basic template to work with. There are a bunch of menus where you can choose to input scripts, frames, iframes, and various other structures and style tags. You can also then display it in a browser of your choice, to see what it looks like, and upload it to your site from the program once it's all done. Oh yeah and it's free.
I like this proggy a lot it must be said.

freewebs isn't that bad, but you can only put up 20 pages if you are a free member. it is a bit complicated, but, I'm stubbern and it was a good summer project.
cool Aracnophilia looks cool. I am guessing the newer version 5 may not be compatible with jaws?
Try it and find out. Jaws-users has a bad habit of not updating those files.
thats what i was planning on doing but figured i'd throw it out here first. V5 is completely redone in Java though so it runs in the Java VM so it can be ran on any OS that has JAVA installed.
OK. I've been trying to change the colors like background and stuff, but jaws is not reading this information as it should. Anyone got any ideas?
what program are you using for your design harmony?
